As an NRI, if you earn any income in India and pay taxes here, one mandatory document that you can't function without is a Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card. This is not just a mere card, but a reflection of our identity, used to carry out our personal or professional financial transactions.
Once a PAN number is allotted to the taxpayer, it remains valid for their lifetime. Now imagine losing it accidentally; all your personal or business financial transactions could be halted until you reissue it. According to the Income Tax Department of India, UTI Infrastructure Technologies Limited (UTIITSL) and Proteam eGov Technologies Limited (Protean) have been appointed to handle the process of PAN application, as well as any other PAN services.
The Income Tax Department of India issues a duplicate Permanent Account Number. PAN cards to taxpayers who have either damaged, lost, or misplaced their original PAN cards.
NRIs can reprint a PAN card either from UTITSL or Protean. Ensure that the re-printing of the PAN card should be done only through that website from which the earlier PAN application and PAN card were dispatched.
Step 1: Go to the official website of TIN-NSDL and choose the "Changes or correction in existing PAN data \ PAN Reprint (No changes in existing PAN data)" as your application type.
Step 2: Select the category whether you are an individual applying, a body of individuals, an LLP, a Company, a Trust, an HUF, or an Association of Persons.
Step 3: Fill in all the required information fields and then submit it.
Step 4: Now, select 'yes' if you need a physical Permanent Account Number, PAN card, and 'no' if you want an e-PAN card. Now, if you have selected e-PAN as the option, please provide an active email ID where your digitally signed e-PAN cards will be sent.
Please note that the fees applicable to both modes differ, as they depend on whether the address is a foreign address or an Indian address.
Step 5: You will now be asked to fill in all personal details and then select your preferred mode, such as proof of address (POA), proof of Date of Birth (DOB), or proof of identity (POI).
Step 6: Review the entire PAN application form one last time to ensure there are no errors, and then submit it by paying the required fees online. After submitting, an acknowledgment number will be generated, which you can use in the future to track the status of your duplicate PAN card application.
Step 1: Visit the UTITSL website
Step 2: Select the option "Reprint of PAN"
Step 3: Fill in all the required details asked for
Step 4: Confirm the details and click on "Get OTP."
Step 5: Submit the OTP you received, pay the fees, and once the fees are successfully paid, you can download the receipt generated for future reference.
As an NRI, you can easily re-issue a PAN card by following any of he above two methods.
Step 1: Download the PAN application form from the Income Tax Department of India's website, or you can also download it from the website of Protea eGov Technologies Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited.
Step 2: Ensure that you fill the PAN application form in block letters with a black pen. On the top right and left of the form, affix two recent passport-size photos of yourself and sign across the photo on the left side of the form. You can also use a thumb impression, but it must be attested by a public notary, a gazetted government officer, or a magistrate's seal or stamp.
Step 3: Gather all the required documents, obtain a copy of each, and submit those copies along with the completed duplicate PAN card form to the PAN facilitation center, along with the required fees.
Step 4: Upon submitting the form, you will receive an acknowledgment receipt. Keep it safe, as this number can be used to track the status of your PAN card application further.
Now, as an NRI, you can also reprint your PAN card through an offline method; you need to visit the nearest PAN facilitation center.
NRIs can reprint a PAN card either from UTITSL or Protean. Ensure that the re-printing of the PAN card should be done only through that website from which the earlier PAN application and PAN card were dispatched.

A small mistake or an error can lead to rejection of your duplicate PAN card application, so here are a few things to keep in mind while applying:
Ensure that the check and all details filled match those on your documents. Do not fill in any incorrect or false information, as the authorities will verify the application form. If a mismatch is found, the application will be rejected immediately.
You must apply for a duplicate PAN card only if your original PAN card is lost, stolen, or damaged. Do not apply if your editing PAN is still active, as holding more than one PAN card is a punishable offense in India.
As per your requirement, check whether you need an e-PAN or a physical PAN card. An e-PAN is valid and is believed to be faster; however, the physical PAN card takes more time to arrive by post.
In the event of a stolen PAN card, the PAN holder should take immediate action to protect themselves from any unauthorized use of their PAN card; this is what you should do.
As per the Income Tax Department of India, it is not permissible for an individual to hold more than one PAN card. However, in some instances, you may receive more than one PAN card, either with a different number or the same number. But as per the income tax law, you can easily surrender it to the Income Tax Department by following this process.
Step 1: Firstly, you need to write a letter addressing the assessing officer and provide all the personal details like your DOB, name, details about which PAN card you want to surrender, and the one you want to retain.
Step 2: Next, you need to submit the application via a seed post, or you can also hand-deliver the letter yourself. Upon doing so, you will get an acknowledgment receipt. This receipt issued by the Income Tax Department serves as proof that your PAN card has been canceled.
