Tax Refund Status Online

As the income tax filing season is here, the expectation for a good, fat income tax refund must be high. Well, the good news is that checking your income tax refund status online now takes less than two minutes, and the best part? Everything is now online, so you don't have to call anyone or visit an office to check your refund status.

In this blog post, we will explain the updated method for 2026, what each status message means, and exactly what to do if your refund has failed or been adjusted against the demand.

Key Takeaways
  • There are two major ways to check your Income Tax Refund Status online:
    • Method 1: Through the Income Tax e-Filing Portal
    • Method 2: Through the Protean (formerly NSDL) Refund Status Portal
  • The types of income tax refund status are: refund issued, refund failed, and refund adjusted against outstanding demand.
  • The refund is typically processed within 20 to 45 days.

Check Income Tax Refund Status Online

The Income Tax Department processes your Income tax refund through the CPC (Centralized Processing Center) in Bengaluru, and the refund is credited directly to your pre-validated bank account linked to your PAN

There are two ways to check your ITR refund status online.

Method 1: Through the Income Tax e-filing Portal (Recommended)

This method is among the most detailed and shows your refund status, assessment year, refund amount, and payment mode.

1: Go to incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN and password.

2: Navigate to "e-file" and select "Income Tax Returns".

Click on "View Filed Returns".

Select the relevant assessment year

Click "View Details" to display your refund status.

If your refund has been processed, you will also see the Refund Reference Number (or Refund Sequence Number, where applicable), along with the date it was credited or dispatched.

Method 2: Through The NSDL/TIN Portal (Without Login)

If you do not want to log in to the income tax e-filing portal, you can still check your e-filing status directly on the NSDL portal.

  1. Visit the official Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) Income Tax Refund Status page and enter your PAN and Assessment Year.
  2. Enter your PAN and then select the relevant assessment year.
  3. Enter the captcha and click on the Submit button.

This method shows the basic refund status through the official Protean (formerly NSDL) portal without requiring your Income Tax e-Filing login credentials.

Quick Tip: Refunds are generally processed within 20 to 45 days after successful e-verification of the ITR in straightforward cases. If it has been more than 60 days since the e-verification, and there is still no update from the authorities, check your refund status and the bank account pre-validation status before raising a grievance.

For NRIs: Your income tax refund will be credited to your NRO or NRE account linked to your PAN card, provided that the account is pre-validated on the online e-filing portal. If your Indian bank account has changed or was closed, then this is the most common reason for a failed refund. Just make sure to update your bank details and request a refund reissue. How To Request A Refund Reissue

In case your income tax refund was failed or returned due to bank account issues, you can request a reissue of your income tax refund directly on the e-filing portal. Here's how:

  • Step 1: Log in to incometax.gov.in
  • Step 2: Go to the "Services" and then select the option "Refund Reissue".
  • Step 3: Select the relevant assessment year for which the refund failed.
  • Step 4: Choose your bank account if you want the refund to be credited to. Just make sure this account is already pre-validated, and if it is not, pre-validate the account first under "My Profile and then Bank Account".
  • Step 5: Submit the reissue request, and you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number to confirm.
  • Step 6: After a few working days, track the status of the refund in the same section.

Just ensure that pre-validating your bank account is the key step here. The income tax e-filing portal requires that your PAN, name, and bank account details match exactly, because even a minor mismatch between your PAN records and the bank records can cause pre-validation to fail. If that happens, contact your bank to ensure the name on your account exactly matches your PAN.

NRIs requesting Reissue must ensure that their NRE or NRO accounts are linked to their PAN card and pre-validated on the portal. In case you have returned to India and your residential status has changed, ensure that your bank account type is accurate, as the income tax refunds in the NRO accounts work for NRIs, but if you have returned to India and have become a resident, just ensure that your bank accounts are redesigned in accordance with FEMA and RBI regulations. Tax refunds should be credited to the appropriate pre-verified bank account based on your updated Residential Status.

Timeline After the Reissue Request: Once you have submitted the reissue request correctly, the refund for your income tax will be processed, typically in 15 to 30 working days, subject to the processing cycle of the CPC.

Income Tax Refund Status Messages & What They Mean

While checking your refund online on the income tax portal, you will see one of the following standard messages. Here's what each one of them actually means and whether you need to take any action against those or not:

Refund Issued

This means the income tax department has processed your refund and sent it to your bank.

The refund is processed via ECS, also known as an electronic transfer. The amount must reflect in your bank account within 3-5 working days of the refund date shown on the portal. If it was sent as a cheque, which is quite rare in today's era, but if it was, it must have been dispatched to your registered address.

Now, if the portal shows "refund issued" but you still haven't received the amount in your bank account after 7-10 working days, check whether your bank account is pre-validated or not, and that the IFSC is correct. If everything looks correct, contact your bank first, as bank credits may occasionally take an additional day or two to reflect in your account.

Refund Failed

The income tax refund failed status reason means the refund generally failed because the income tax department attempted to credit it, but for some reason the transaction could not proceed. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • Bank account details are incorrect and outdated.
  • The bank account is either closed or dormant.
  • The account is not pre-validated on the e-filing portal.
  • The PAN is not linked to the bank account.

A failed refund does not necessarily mean that you have lost the money. You need to submit a refund reissue request after correcting the underlying issue, as explained above.

Check the reason for the failed transaction on the portal (it is generally listed alongside the status) and fix the underlying issue before requesting it.

Refund Adjusted Against The Outstanding Demand

This income tax refund status often surprises the taxpayer. If there is an outstanding tax demand from a previous assessment year linked to your PAN, the department has the right under Section 245 of the IT Act to adjust your current income tax refund, either fully or partially.

Now, before doing this, the department is required to send you an intimation notice, giving you an opportunity to agree or disagree with the adjustments. Check your income tax e-filing portal inbox and your registered email for any Section 245 notice.

  • If you end up agreeing with the demand, the adjustment stands, and the remaining refund (if any) will be credited to your bank account.
  • If you disagree, you must respond to the income tax notice within the specified time and explain why the demand is incorrect. Until the matter is resolved, the refunds will remain adjusted.

If you have not received the Section 245 notice, you can raise a grievance on the portal. This is a procedural requirement, and the department must follow it before making any adjustment.

The Bottom Line

Checking your status for an income tax refund on the portal online is easy and straightforward, as the income tax e-filing portal gives you a clear, real-time update within seconds of you logging in. The key is knowing what each status message means and acting promptly if something needs fixing.

For most taxpayers, a "refund issued" status means the money is on its way. For a failed refund, the fix is generally a pre-validation update and a reissue request. And if your refund has been adjusted against an outstanding demand, check your portal inbox for the Section 245 Notice before taking any further steps.
