An NRI minor PAN (Permanent Account Number) card is issued by the Income Tax Department to individuals who are under the age of 18. It serves the same purpose as a regular PAN card and has a 10-digit alphanumeric number. However, a PAN card for a minor doesn't include the minor's photograph or signature. Instead, it has the minor's photo and the signature of either the parent or guardian.

Although obtaining a PAN card is not mandatory for every child, it might become essential in several financial scenarios. It includes making investments, opening a bank account, making the child a nominee in any financial assets, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

A minor PAN card is issued to individuals who are under the age of 18. It doesn't carry the minor's photograph or signature. It becomes a "Major or regular PAN" when the individual turns the age of 18 and applies for PAN data change/correction to update their PAN details.

It cannot be used for identity purposes because the PAN card will not include the signature or updated photograph of the minor. Hence, the minor child must reapply for the updated or corrected version of the PAN card when they turn 18 years old. They must send their latest signature, photo, and documents for the update, but the PAN number will stay the same.

You can convert your minor PAN card to a major PAN card via the NSDL website. Visit the website, select, and fill out the "Changes or Corrections in existing PAN data/reprint of PAN card" option.

There is no minimum age for applying for a PAN card as per the rules of the Income Tax Act. Hence, a PAN card can be applied for a minor below five years of age.

The minor PAN card is for individuals who are under the age of 18 years, and the major PAN card is for individuals who are above the age of 18. A minor PAN card doesn't include the signature, identity proof, or address documents of the minor. Conversely, the major PAN card or a regular PAN card will contain the recent photo of the individual along with the signature, identity proof, and address documents.
